A Bright Future... Positive Predictions for 2020
As featured on Sloto Magazine

Another year has gone by. It’s time to welcome the new decade with a positive outlook and an eagerness to thrive. The coming years will be crucial to stabilize the earth as we face several global crises. Fortunately there is an army of scientists, activists, visionaries and go-getters out there that are working overtime to make this planet a better home for everyone.

In this article we will review some of the predictions for 2020. The pace of change is accelerating and, fortunately, we are seeing positive developments in many areas that need amending. Here are the top positive predictions for 2020:

Renewable Energy

Fossil fuels are running out fast. With a growing world population set to reach 8.5 billion by 2030, the global community needs to find renewable sources of energy before we deplete the underground fuels that took millions, if not billions, of years to be amassed. Luckily, predictions state that 20% of global energy will come from renewable sources. The EU has set this as its target for all its member states. China is also working strongly in this direction. Some countries such as Iceland and Costa Rica have been able to run on 100% renewable energy for an entire year!

Electric Cars

Electric cars will be a common sight in 2020.  By the end of 2018 there were around 6 million electric cars sold across the globe. China leads the pack with around 2 million electric cars purchased every year. One of the major challenges has been to get as many miles from a single charge. It is predicted that some electric cars will be able to drive up to 700 miles on a single charge by 2020!

Self-driving cars

Self-driving cars have been on the road since 2013. Enormous resources have been allocated to develop a safe and efficient technology for autonomous driving cars. Bold predictions have been made for 2020 by Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla. He states: “I think we will be ‘feature-complete’ on full self-driving this year, meaning the car will be able to find you in a parking lot, pick you up, take you all the way to your destination without a person’s intervention.” If this is truly the case, suddenly commuting 1 hour is not so terrible, since you can catch up on sleep or simply relax and read a book while on your way to work!

Lab-grown meat

The production of meat (beef in particular) is taking a tremendous toll on our planet. It takes 25 kilograms of grain and 15,000 liters of water to produce just 1 kilogram of beef. Only 71% of the Earth’s land surface is habitable, when you take out glaciers and barren land. Of the habitable land area, 50% is used for agricultural purposes. Over three quarters of the agricultural land is used for livestock. Many farmers are cutting down forests to make room for cattle and other livestock due to the high demand for meat. Eating meat is becoming a luxury at a time the planet is aching in agony. This is why some entrepreneurs are beginning to produce meat in a lab! Yes, it’s been done already and it’s only a matter of making it cost-efficient so the average Joe can afford it. Some people predict that by 2020 we will see the first lab-grown meat in supermarkets!

A cure for malaria

Malaria is a leading global threat. There were 219 million cases of malaria in 2017 and 435,000 deaths. China has made a huge effort to eradicate the disease from their country and is about to celebrate a malaria-free country in 2020. Furthermore, there is a new vaccine against malaria that will be tested in 2020, in the west African island of Bioko. If successful, we might be entering the first stages of a malaria-free world!
