Chapter 7: The Ancient Volcano

Mr. Sloto opened his eyes, he had blacked out. A strange noise came from outside. Sounded like a very large vacuum cleaner sucking in all space... he looked out the time machine’s window and was in shock! They landed in front of a black hole. It was slowly sucking them in and opposite the black hole was an asteroid field. They were in a bind.

Victor what shall we do!? VICTOR! – cried Mr. Sloto. Victor slowly woke up and immediately understood they were in danger once again.
Victor spoke: we have one of two options. Go into the black hole or fly through the asteroid field. I say we go towards the asteroids and try to maneuver out. Mr. Sloto disagreed; he wanted to go into the black hole.

Mr. Sloto reached into his coin slot and took out Triton's coin. Let's flip a coin, he said. Head is black hole, tail is asteroids.
He flipped the coin but it did not land on the floor. It got sucked out of the time machine through a small crack and into the black hole... Oh no! – both Mr. Sloto and Victor yelled!

A very dark and powerful voice spoke out of the black hole. Whose coin is this!?

It's Tritons coin, messenger of the sea! Mr. Sloto answered.

For this coin I grant you two wishes, the voice replied.

Mr. Sloto asked to go through the black hole without being harmed! Victor then said that they wanted to reappear somewhere close to civilization.

The voice consented and they were pulled through a vortex of light and magic.

When the time machine stopped moving, they looked outside and there were lush palm trees with ripe coconuts, cacao bean trees and at the distance they saw what appeared to be gigantic pyramids with symbols of jaguars, serpents and plumed eagles ….

Where have they landed? Will the next adventure inspire Victor and Mr. Sloto for a new slot machine theme?

So how does it work?- asked Victor Fluke once inside the time machine.

Mr. Sloto and Victor where both excited, their adventure through time was about to begin. They were going to gather inspiration for creating the best slot machines in the world. They decided to start in the Cretaceous period, 65 million years ago, to experience first-hand the world of the dinosaurs.

Mr. Sloto was preparing the time machine, entering the precise date and location when suddenly Victor began gasping for air. Achooo, went Victor sneezing so hard that it startled Mr. Sloto and accidentally pressing random buttons on the machine's mainframe.

The machine began buzzing and shaking. Victor had a nervous look on his face. What's happening? - he asked.

Mr. Sloto returned to his senses and looked at the computer. The time's machine computer was set to travel back to 65 BILLION years in the past. WHAT!? shrieked Victor- that's impossible, he said. The universe is only 14 billion years old!

Both Victor and Mr. Sloto looked out the small time machine's window. They couldn't believe their eyes. Out there was a world they had never seen before. There were enormous explosions, a fiery world of rock, gas and fire!

Victor tried to make sense of what he was seeing. They were clearly in outer space, but what those huge explosions were taking place far away.Victor looked carefully out the window and then he understood what was happening. They were ancient suns expanding to colossal sizes and then exploding, leaving a spectacle more beautiful than any 4th of July.

They are Novas and Supernovas, explained Victor. We are probably in a parallel universe, prior to our own, and these are its giant stars exploding all around us. What a great idea for a slot machine, Victor thought.

Suddenly they noticed they were very close to a star that was about to explode. Victor urged Mr. Sloto to quickly get them out of there. Mr. Sloto nervously typed some numbers on the computer. The machine started buzzing and whirling again and suddenly everything went black outside the window, seconds before the star exploded.

Where will they reappear after their space adventure? What will be the inspiration for the next slot machine?

They had survived. It was dark blue outside the window. Victor and Mr. Sloto felt a calming motion, as if the time machine were slowly descending like a feather in air. They tried to make out their surroundings. The air outside was murky, making it hard to distinguish anything at all. They tried to open the door but they felt an incredible pressure or power from outside the vessel, that would not allow them to pry open the door.

Suddenly, a beautiful woman appeared to them outside the window and said "Alas, you have come to take the treasures of this world. Many have attempted this before and none have succeeded. I will help you reach the secret location but from there on, you're on your own." Victor and Mr. Sloto were astounded by both the sight of her and the things she declared. She was a beautiful young woman wearing a most tantalizing dress, decorated with what seemed like fish scales.

They watched her dance in the air, like a mote of dust. Victor quickly jumped to the window and asked "Where are we and what is this place?. The woman, being somewhat stunned herself at the sight of them, said "I am a mermaid, daughter of Triton."

Mr. Sloto's eyes grew wide with amazement. They were underwater, in some primordial plane where gods and mermaids were real! The mermaid spoke again, "I will push your ship to the treasure's location many leagues underwater."

She swam pushing the time machine further into the deep. Victor and Mr. Sloto began to see a light. It grew brighter and brighter. When they were close enough to the source of light, they saw it was a mountain the size of Everest. But a mountain of gold, pure gold coins!

The mermaid spoke. I will blow a bubble of air so you can travel inside it and pick as many coins as you'd like. But you must hurry! And do return quickly!"

Mr. Sloto took a step forward and said he would do it. He opened the time machine's door and was absorbed by the mermaid's bubble. He swam as fast as he could and picked up some coins.

Suddenly the waters began to stir and a giant creature appeared, holding a trident. A load roar was heard:

"Who steals from my treasure, man or beast?"

Mr. Sloto mustered some courage and said: "None of the above, it is a machine!"

The creature was amazed and said: "I am Triton, messenger of the sea. In all my years underwater, I've never seen a living machine!"

Mr. Sloto confidence rising, said: "Such am I. I seek not riches but a small souvenir from this enchanted land."

Triton picked a coin and said: "Take this one and tell all creatures above that the mighty Triton gave it to you".

Mr. Sloto said he would have to enter his vessel before the bubble burst. So he thanked Triton and took the coin. Once inside the time machine, Victor spoke frenetically to Mr. Sloto. We need to get out of here, water is starting to leak in. Mr. Sloto, in a thoughtless act, put Triton's golden coin in his slot. Suddenly his reels starting to spin very rapidly, emitting sparks and fumes. Mr. Sloto started to slide uncontrollably inside the time machine, bumping into all the controls. The machine started to run again and they had no idea where they would appear after Mr. Sloto's reels lined up.

Where will they appear after their underwater adventure? What will be the inspiration for the next slot machine?

Victor Fluke could hardly get any sleep that night. A wild stream of images was running through his head. How can it be that leprechauns really exist? Or that my invention Mr. Sloto is now a fully living machine?

Victor stood up at around 6am to make himself a cup of coffee. Mr. Sloto was peacefully asleep on the couch. Victor was about to pour himself a cup when he suddenly remember what Mr. Sloto had said before he went to bed. He dropped the cup of coffee watching it break into a hundred pieces. Mr. Sloto woke up in a flash. Victor, in a near gasp said: You've fallen in love?

Mr. Sloto had a smirk on his face. Yes, he said, I've fallen in love with the most beautiful woman in the world. Sit down while I tell you the story.

Victor was sweating cold. Just when he thought he couldn't get any more surprises, the biggest one was yet to come.

Mr. Sloto explained: Lucky the Leprechaun is full of tricks. He made me enter a capsule he claimed to be a time machine. I got in and he asked me where I wanted to go. I said I wanted to go and visit a great ancient empire. He snapped his finger and off we went into a kind of wormhole.

When we exited the machine, sand was the only thing I could see. But then I turned my head and saw the great Sphinx of Giza. Lucky said we should go meet the pharaoh, a good old friend of his.

We reached a beautiful palace and Lucky was allowed to enter like he was some distinguished guest. We entered the courtyard and in the middle was this radiant woman. Her name is… Cleopatra.

Victor jaw nearly hit the floor. Mr. Sloto continued: We spent 3 months together and I got to know all the details of her empire. Inevitably, we became quite close but our affair had to end prematurely since the empire was under attack by the Roman Empire.

Mr. Sloto opened his hand and showed Victor a gold coin with a bust of Cleopatra engraved in it. Here, you can have it, he said - it will bring you luck!

Victor was frozen as a statue and just then Mr. Sloto said: I want you to travel back in time with me, so you can get first-hand experience of all ages in human history. Then I want us to use that knowledge in order to design the best slot machines every seen on this planet…
