History of Blackjack

The origins of Blackjack are unclear but historians believe that it can be traced back to ancient Rome when Romans played a counting game with different numbers painted on blocks. Some form of the old Roman game was adapted to playing cards when they found their way to Europe in the 14th century and from that evolved the game of Chemin de Fer that became popular in the royal court of King Louis XV.

Over time Chemin de Fer melded with the Italian game of Sette e Mezzo (seven and a half), French Quinze (fifteen) and Spanish Trente-Un (One and Thirty) into Vingt-et-Un (twenty one), the basis of blackjack.

From the first time that vingt-et-un was introduced into European casinos, it was a hit. It was sophisticated enough to entice highly skilled gamers yet simple enough to attract players who didn’t have a lot of gaming experience or background. It would be played for low or high stakes and offered plenty of excitement regardless of who was playing.

When French settlers began to settle North American colonies they brought the game of vingt-et-un with them.  Americans started to call the game “blackjack” after the expression that would be called out whenever a bonus hand appeared in which either a black spade jack or a black clubs jack was dealt together with the ace of spades. The “blackjack” hand paid out a ten-to-one bonus payout and the hoped-for blackjack became the name by which the game came to be known in America.

Blackjack was soon competing with poker for the #1 place as America’s most popular card game. When Vegas casinos opened in the ‘30s and ‘40s blackjack quickly skyrocketed to the casinos’ most asked-for game. Blackjack is now available as a mobile casino game, as a popular gaming machine and where enthusiasts can play with no table limits and at the  live dealer casino.

Even with these options, many gamers enjoy some alternate blackjack action. If you’re looking for a games lobby that provides multiple blackjack variations from which to choose, check out the SlotoCash casino.

Classic Blackjack

Classic blackjack is played with a 52 card deck. Both the player and the dealer receive one hidden card and one revealed card. Both place a bet based on their assessment of how close they believe that they will get to a total of 21 without exceeding 21 points. Each side can then take “hits” – extra cards – as they try to build their hand towards 21 points.  If either the player or the dealer exceed 21 points, the other side automatically wins and collects both all bets that were placed into the pot.

Perfect Pairs Blackjack

Perfect Pairs Blackjack is a popular variation of the standard game  of Blackjack. In Perfect Pairs Blackjack, players can place an additional side bet that will cover the possibility that the first two cards dealt will be a pair.  Players start the game with two cards face up and win their side bet if they get a mixed pair (a pair made up of two different colors and pays out at a rate of 7/1), a color pair (a pair of the same color but different suits with a payout rate of 15/1), and a perfect pair (a pair in which both cards are the same suit and the same rank with a payout of 30/1).

Face Up 21 Blackjack

Face Up 21 Blackjack, also known as “Double Exposure Blackjack” differs little from classic blackjack except that both the dealer’s cards are dealt face up. The player can split or double down and the blackjack hand payout is even money. A few other notable differences from classic blackjack include the use of up to 8 decks of cards and the face that the player can split only once on any two cards of the same value and can double down on any original hand or on any 9, 10, or jack. The dealer hits on a soft 17 and stands on a soft value of 18 (higher at some casinos).

Suit ‘em Up 21 Blackjack

Suit 'Em Up blackjack involves a side wager that your first two cards will be from the same suit. If the first two cards are not suited, the Suit 'Em Up wager is collected. Suit ‘em Up payouts for suited aces are 60 to 1, for suited blackjack is 10 to 1, for a suited pair is 5 to one, for a suited 11 is 3 to 1 and any other suited pair is 2 to 1.

Super 21 Blackjack

Super 21 Blackjack is the newest blackjack variation. The biggest difference between this version and classic blackjack is that a player’s blackjack beats the dealer’s blackjack. Hands, including pairs of aces,  can be spit up to 4 times and you can play any way that you want after the split including doubling down after a split. One unique trait of Super 21 Blackjack is that you can surrender a card after doubling with only your original bet lost and the doubled bet is returned.  Winning a hand with 6 cards gets you a 2 to 1 payout. Side bets like perfect pairs are added to Super 21 Blackjack in some casinos.
