Baccarat

The word "baccarat" is derived from the Italian word "baccara", which means "zero." Originally, the game was played with Tarot cards before standard decks became common and the name of the game is based on the fact that baccarat play involves a zero value for all tens and face cards.

The game migrated to France, where it became an obsession of the aristocracy, who called it "Chemin de Fer" – "Railway" – so named because the cards were placed in an iron box that moved around the table like a train.

For decades, this version was illegal in public spacesbut it thrived in private "gaming salons." This exclusivity gave Baccarat its elite reputation that persists today.

In the original French version, players took turns being the Banker but when South Americans started to play, the name changed again, this time to Punto Banco.  In this version, the House was the Banker, and the third-card rules became fixed. This was the variation that was adopted in Vegas casinos, where the glamour of the high-limit "Baccarat Pit" became a staple of the Strip.

Ian Fleming cemented baccarat in pop culture by making it the favorite game of James Bond. It is especially popular in Asia and accounts for between 80% - 90% at Macau casinos.

Playing Baccarat

Baccarat is viewed as the most player-friendly game on the casino floor. Other table games may try to lure you in with complex strategies or flashy side bets, but Baccarat offers an elegant, almost meditative simplicity. It’s a game where the math is done for you. The house edge is among the lowest in the industry, and the optimal strategy can be summarized with the advice to "Bet Banker."

To play baccarat, your core objective is to predict which of two hands—the Player or the Banker—will get a total closest to 9 based on the cards dealt and the card values. Aces are valued at 1 point, 2s through 9s are valued at face value and 10s and face cards are valued at 0.

At the beginning of the game, two cards are dealt to the Player and two to the Banker. If the total of a hand exceeds 9, the first digit is dropped. For example, a 7 and an 8 are valued at 15, but in Baccarat, that hand is worth 5. If either the player or Banker is dealt a total of 8 or 9 with the first two cards, this is called a Natural and the game ends immediately as the higher natural wins.

If no one has a natural, a third card may be dealt -- if the Player's total is 0–5, they draw a third card, but if it's 6 or 7, they stand. The Banker's move depends on whether the player drew a card and what that card was. The totals are compare,d and whoever is closest to 9, wins.

Player-Friendly

Why is baccarat thought of as the most player-friendly game at the casino?

Baccarat is valued for its stress-free mechanics that make it the perfect antidote to the high-pressure blackjack table.

  • With a house advantage of just 1.06% on Banker bets, Baccarat offers some of the best statistical value in the casino.
  • Unlike Blackjack, where one "wrong" hit can turn a good game upside down, Baccarat's rules are fixed. The dealer handles the Third Card Rule, which leaves you free to enjoy the game.
  • There are only three main bets to choose from. It’s a game of intuition, so you don't have to memorize massive strategy charts to enjoy the high percentage of wins that the low house edge allows.

Tips for Playing Baccarat

Even though baccarat is a simple game, there are a few tips that you can use to help you achieve maximum results.  They include:

Bet on the Banker – betting on the Banker gives you the best mathematical chance of winning. The Banker hand wins roughly 50.68% of the time. That, together with a house edge of 1.06%, makes it the most player-friendly in the room.

Ignore the Tie Bet – it might seem tempting to aim for the massive Tie Bet payouts (8:1 or 9:1), but pro baccarat players consider the Tie bet to be a sucker bet. The house edge on a Tie bet is more than 14%. Lose more than one or two of those bets and you'll see your bankroll drain quickly.

Don't Hunt for Patterns – just because the Banker has won five times in a row doesn't mean the Player is "due" to win next. The odds remain exactly the same for every deal. Use the scoreboards for fun, but don't bet based on what you perceive as a winning/losing streak.
