Amazon’s Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power has already completed its first season and is now deep in production of a second season that takes viewers back to a time before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy took place. The film focuses on an era when kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, when heroes were tested, great powers were forged villains threatened the course of history and hope was elusive. Some of the characters in Rings of Power are familiar while others are new but all confront the evil that threatens Middle-Earth.

Purple Hearts – Netflix

Purple Hearts is based on a 2017 novel by Tess Wakefield novel in which a young couple embarks on a marriage of convenience. Cassie is a struggling singer-songwriter who marries Marine Luke to obtain health benefits given to military families. Luke marries Cassie because, as a married man, he will receive more money which he needs. The charade moves forward and slowly, the couple realizes that they really do belong together.

Home Alone – Disney Plus

Home Alone was first released in 1990 but remains so popular today that it was rated as one of Disney Plus’s most-popular videos in 2022. The movie tells the story of 8-year-old Kevin McAllister who is accidentally left at home after his family sets out on a Christmas vacation. Kevin prepares to enjoy some time alone, away from nagging parents and annoying siblings but discovers that a pair of robbers have targeted his house for a burglary while, they believe, everyone is away. Kevin sets out to defend his home by outwitting the burglars at every turn in a series of hilarious traps.

Luck – Apple TV

This 2022 computer-animated comedy/fantasy film is set in the Land of Luck where Sam Greenfield must convince an anthropomorphic cat named Bob (Pegg) to assist her as she tries to turn her luck around.

The Adam Project – Netflix

The Adam Project is a science-fiction fantasy that follows pilot Adam Reed who time-travels from 2050 backwards, landing in 2022 where he “meets” his 12-year-old self who is grieving the sudden death of his father and is coping with bullying and a strained relationship with his mother. Young Adam joins older Adam to help him fly his 2050 jet and battle Maya Sorian who has monopolized Adam’s father Louis Reed’s discovery of time travel to secure her future wealth and power.

Older Adam’s future wife, Laura, joins the pair, as eventually does Louis. They manage to destroy the younger version of Sorian which wipes the older Sorian out of existence. The Reeds return home and each returns to his/her respective time. The experience shapes the life of the future Adam but learns to get rid of his anger and cope with the wounds that death brought.

The Boys – Amazon

"The Boys" is an example of how a film that’s popular with the public can also be popular with the critics – it has been nominated for 6 Primetime Emmys. The Boys is set in a universe where superheroes are owned by a powerful corporation, Vought International, which aggressively markets and monetizes them. Many of The Boys are arrogant and corrupt. There are two groups of Boys – The Seven, the premier superhero team led by the unstable and egotistical Homelander and the titular Boys, led by Billy Butcher, who take on vigilante roles as they try to keep corrupted superheroes under control. The conflict between the two groups includes focus on new team members including the Seven's A-Train  and the Boys’ Hugh "Hughie" Campbell.

Encanto – Disney Plus

Encanto was another Disney success story that continues to enthrall audiences young and not-so-young.  Accompanied by a musical score worthy of Grammy Awards, Encanto follows a multigenerational Colombian family blessed with magical powers. The family lives in Encanto and uses their magic to help their friends and neighbors. When the one family member who doesn’t have magical powers,  Mirabel, starts to understand that the family is losing their magic, she sets out to save her family and their magical house.

South Side – HBO Max

South Side is a new HBO Max series that follows a pair of small-time hustlers who are focused on upward mobility though their schemes to achieve that status are questionable.

Spirited – Apple TV

Spirited is an  Apple TV original that reimages Charles Dickens’s Christmas Carol The movie mixes comedy, catchy songs and unexpected plot twists that tell the original story while satirizing subsequent adaptations. In the film, the Ghost of Christmas Present has to return to Earth to retire so he “visits” grouch Clint Briggs, who will, hopefully, help the Ghost come to terms with his own past.
