Neon Lights of Vegas

Las Vegas was one of the first locations where entertainment centers set up neon lights to lure in customers. Neon signs are so closely identified with Las Vegas that a museum, the Neon Museum of Las Vegas, was created to  preserve the city's neon sign which is regarded as Las Vegas’s most iconic art form as well as to highlight other elements of Las Vegas architecture, design, and culture.

Neon signs were first made popular in the 1920s when they appeared in Time Square. Other neon signs began to appear in other locales but once the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign was erected on Las Vegas Boulevard South in 1959, neon and Las Vegas became as intertwined as cereal and milk.

The sign was conceived by local salesman Ted Rogich and designed by Betty Willis in the 1950s “Googie” style with pastel colors and triangles. Willis added symbols to the sign – for instance, “Welcome” is spelled out with circles around each letter that are meant to represent silver dollars.

Willis refused to copyright the sign because she considered it to be a gift to Las Vegas. That means that, till today, everyone can use it – on keychains, bumper stickers, t-shirts, etc. The sign was even featured on the 2005 Nevada license plate as a celebration of the 100-year anniversary of the founding of Las Vegas.

Today, the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign is a tourist landmark and its historical status has been recognized by the National Register of Historic Places.

Other famous Las Vegas neon signs include

  • Circus Circus Clown – The Las Vegas Strip’s Circus Circus Hotel and Casino’s 123-foot neon clown has been flashing its smile since 1968 in an effort to draw families who may be looking for more for their visit than a trip to the gaming floor.
  • The Flamingo Hotel – The Flamingo Hotel opened its doors in Las Vegas in 1946 and it’s the only Las Vegas hotel-casino that’s survived since then. The Flamingo was originally owned and operated by mafia bigwig Bugsy Siegel and, although it’s been renovated multiple times and changed ownership and management several times since then, many people still like to go to The Flamingo for a bit of old Vegas excitement. In addition to the original Flamingo sign, the hotel is surrounded by neon flamingos.
  • In-and-Out – The Tropicana Avenue In-and-Out burger is a “not to be missed” Vegas experience as its sign indicated.
  • Paris Las Vegas – The Paris Las Vegas Casino created their unique sign that attracts customers with a 180-foot neon balloon display, modeled after the 1783 “Montgolfier Balloon” which flew over the city of Paris with passengers well-before other hot air balloons took to the sky.
