The game of craps seems to date back to the era of the Crusaders, though no one is quite sure whether craps originated with the Arabic dice game of Al Zar which Crusaders in the middle East learned during their travels or developed on their own while they were besieging a castle with a similar name.

Gameplay
A round of Craps consists of a roll (or multiple rolls) of dice. The “shooter” starts by rolling the “comeout roll” and if that comeout roll equals 7 or 11, any player who bets the pass line scores an automatic win.
If the comeout roll is a two, three or twelve, any player who bet on the pass line loses automatically. Other numbers on the comeout roll become the “point: -- the number the shooter must match in a subsequent roll.
Now that the point is established, the shooter must roll that number before s/he rolls a 7. If a 7 is rolled before the point, the round finishes and the next shooter gets to start his/her turn.
As the dice move around the table, anyone who wagered on the previous roll is eligible to become a shooter. Each person can choose whether to become a shooter or pass.
Wagering
That pretty much describes how to play but the secret of success involves how you bet. The bet that you place determines your win and your payout.
The most common types of bets in craps are pass line bets, place bets, hard ways and craps & eleven.
In a Pass Line bet the better wagers on the first roll -- 7 or 11 to win. Numbers 2, 3, or 12 loses. Numbers 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 must repeat before a seven to win.
- In a Don’t Pass Bet, the player can bets on the first 2 or 3 rolls to win, 12 to push, or 7 or 11 to lose. If 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 rolls, there must be a seven rolled before the number repeats.
- A Come Bet is similar to the pass line bet with the same rules apply but here, it’s a game within a game.
- A Don’t Come Bet is like the Don’t Pass bet with the same rules. Again, a game within a game.
- A Field Bet wins if any of the numbers that are in the field box come out. Also called a “One Roll Bet.”
- A Place Bet is a wager made on the point numbers that are not contract bets (4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10). Unless the player indicates otherwise, a Place Bet is “off” on the come-out roll.
- A Proposition Bet is a one-roll bet on numbers 2, 3, 7, 11 and 12.
