In the current decade, more than 85% of all primary energy-consumption sources in the world are fossil fuels, which consist of petroleum (34%), coal (28%), and natural gas (23%). These sources are considered non-renewable resources because they take millions of years to form, and current reserves are being depleted at a much faster rate than new ones being made.

While the United States hold less than 5% of the world’s population, they use up more than a quarter of the world’s supply of fossil fuels, triggering a warning to the world that the environment can no longer tolerate the negative effects of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and other greenhouse gases. Initiatives like the Paris agreement look to reduce emissions in order to keep the rise in global warming under control.

Countries like Costa Rica have been supporting renewable resources for the last five years, and it powers over 98% of all their electricity. Also, with the advance of technology and science, people have found other sources that are both sustainable and renewable. Here are some examples:

Solar Power: Solar panels produce renewable energy while securing low utility rates. They use the energy from the Sun to produce enough energy to power a whole household by themselves!

Wind Turbines: These turbines convert the wind’s kinetic energy into electrical energy and can rotate either on a horizontal or vertical axis. Wind has the lowest greenhouse gas emissions and most favorable social impact compared to other energy converters.

Power from Tides: The immense power of waves can be captured to generate electricity, desalinate water or pumping water. It is estimated that the total energy that could be generated by waves would account for 33% of the total amount of energy consumed annually by the US.

The future looks uncertain in regards to fossil fuels, but anything can happen. What other technologies can you think of are or will be capable of replacing fossil fuels and providing a sustainable future for our beautiful planet?

Christmas is round the corner, which means winter has arrived and with it that itchy skin sensation. Don’t let winter rob you of your well-deserved joy!

Let’s take a look at a few tips on how to take care of your body during the harsh winter months.

Take lukewarm baths or showers

While it may be tempting to take a bath in real hot almost sizzling Jacuzzi like temperature water, you want to keep the water lukewarm as hot water strips your skin from its natural oils.

Exfoliate your skin

Removing dead skin cells and moisturizing to penetrate deeper into your skin is one of the most important things you can do for you body during wintertime. You can even try and put together your own homemade scrub with a few simple ingredients.

Try a lavender body scrub:

1/2 cup of coarse sea salt.

1/3 cup of grape seed oil

1 tablespoon of dried lavender.

16 drops of lavender essential oil.

Or, you can whip up a super simple coffee scrub:

1/4 cup raw sugar

1/4 cup ground coffee

1 tbsp. olive oil

2 tbsp. coconut oil

1 tbsp. sea salt

Take care of your face too

Your face will be screaming for extra pampering during winter. You also want to exfoliate this area at least 3 times a week. Plus, if you don’t have one already, it’s not a bad idea to purchase a night eye cream. The area around your eyes is real thin and needs extra care during the colder months of the year. You don’t want to look 15 years older in the upcoming Christmas parties, do you?

Don’t forget your sunscreen

Remember that while it may be cold outside, the sun is still shinning and those UV rays aren’t taking a vacation. Make sure you apply sunscreen daily, as the winter sun will still cause havoc on your skin.

A healthy diet makes all the difference in the world. Not just on the outside and keeping your body health, but also on the inside and maintaining your emotional-self well and balanced.  This is where superfoods make a grand entrance.

According to medical research, superfoods are foods that have gigantic doses of vitamins and minerals that can help you fight off diseases and live a longer, healthier life.

Superfoods are not only nutritional, but also delicious and a great excuse to gobble on pumpkin pie, blueberry muffins, cream cheese and chocolate-covered strawberries. Well, there are a few modifications to be made – such as reducing the added sugar – if we want to get the most benefits

Let’s take a look at 5 of the greatest superfoods we can consume to lead a happier and healthier life

Greek yogurt – a delicious white, fluffy topping.

Greek yogurt by itself is already delicious, but you can turn into so much more and still get its superfood benefits. You know when you’re eating Mexican food you want to add cream on top of everything? Well, add Greek yogurt instead! You can also replace mayonnaise and cream cheese with this superfood for a super delicious and healthy spread.

Quinoa – what’s this tiny grain all about?

When we think about quinoa, we think about a semi-new grain. This seed is as tiny as can be, but packed incredibly nutritional fortitude. With a taste similar to rice or couscous, but without all the carbs associated with these, quinoa is unique in the way that it provides all nine essential amino acids our bodies can't produce alone. What’s more, it’s full of protein. Talk about a super superfood right there!

Blueberries – Oompa Loompa’s favorites!

These blue, sweet berries need no real introduction. Blueberries are famous for appearing in your pancakes, but there are many other ways to eat this fiber, vitamin C, and cancer-fighting filled fruit.  Try making blueberry overnight oats, blueberry zucchini muffins and blueberry and pecan granola! Some studies even suggest blueberries help improve our memories, so there – that surely helps qualify this berry type as a superfood!

Pumpkin – a superfood just in time for Halloween

Carving pumpkins is always a fun activity to do with the kids. But, pumpkins pack so much more than scary faces. Full of antioxidants and vitamins, these squashes are composed of beta-carotene, a provitamin that the body converts to vitamin A, which helps boost our immune system and keeps our vision extra crystal clear.

Strawberries – Vitamin C mixed with berries

Good on top of or mixed with almost anything and everything – these berries are the queens of Vitamin C. One cup of these juicy red ladies meets the daily requirement for vitamin C (74 milligrams per day for women and 90 for men) and pack antioxidants that help build and repair the body's tissues, boost immunity, and gets rid off extra free radical damage.
